Yazmin Staats is a recurring character on Peacock's modern-day reinterpretation, Bel-Air. She is portrayed by Riele Downs.
Yazmin is the president of the Black Student Union at Bel-Air Academy. While their paths have not previously crossed at school, Yazmin finds herself impressed by Carlton's contributions to the club.
Biography[]
Yazmin welcomes Carlton and Will to the BSU, however, certain members, namely Drew, accuses Carlton of only coming to their meetings previously to get their votes while running for class president. And after he got elected, he never came back, which Yazmin admits is true. While this may be true, the real reason he doesn't do BSUs is that they do a lot of complaining without any action. None of them show up for the student town halls or run for student government to actually change anything. Will interjects and adds that Carlton is willing to pitch bigger ideas for the union to tackle. Yazmin is open to any ideas Carlton may have and encourages him to keep coming to the meetings.[1]
Yazmin wants Carlton to give a speech
Yazmin wants Carlton to give a speech during the protest and even offers to help him write it, which leads to a near-kiss when the two of them are finally alone, only for Hilary to interrupt. After getting word of the school's attempts to derail the protest, Yazmin calls an emergency BSU meeting to discuss if they should move forward with the walk out. This leads to Ms. Bassin arranging a meeting with Principal Hartwig, with whom they come to a mutually beneficial agreement, though Yazmin doesn't like the terms and devises a plan with Will to move forward with the walk-out as planned. However, when it comes time for Carlton to give his speech, he fails to do so, and Will takes over by hanging a "Black Teachers Matter" banner from the roof.[2]
Yazmin confronts Carlton for not following through with the protest in order to get nominated for the Founder's Award. Carlton tries to explain that it's more complicated than it seems, but Yazmin isn't convinced, suspecting that Carlton played her and the BSU. However, during the BSU's bowling party, she learns this was not the case. In all actuality, Carlton had a panic attack, adding that he has anxiety for which he takes medication in order to fit into their Bel-Air bubble.[3]
After it is announced that Will has been nominated forthe Founder's Award, Carlton becomes upset, but Will doesn't even know how he was nominated, to which Yazmin reveals that he was nominated by the BSU. Carlton confronts Yazmin, who he suspects is trying to cancel him out by nominating Will. Yazmin insists it wasn't personal and argues that Will brings a perspective that they've never seen before. No matter who wins, this is the first time two black students have even been nominated for such an achievement.[4]
