Biography[]
Recruiting Vivian[]
Through Joan, Reid sets up a meeting with Vivian to discuss the fact that she's making her way back into the art world. While Vivian appreciates his complimentary view of her work, she's not exactly sure what he wants from her. Reid explains that he's always been enamored with her paintings, so when Joan told him that she was returning to the art world, he had to jump at the opportunity, even going as far as dedicating an empty space in his gallery for her art work. Vivian is hesitant, but Reid tells her that there's never a right time. She just has to go for it.[1]
Reid attends the Lupus fundraiser being hosted by Vivian. He sneaks away from the guests to get a look at the new piece Viv has been working on, which he insists is incredible. He's prepared to prove this, suggesting that she enter her work into the silent auction. If it goes for more than $15,000, she has to show her art at his gallery opening. Philip joins them and learns from Reid that Viv has begun painting again. Reid offers to take the painting himself, but Phil insists that he'll have someone bring the painting into the main room.
As the night comes to an end, Vivian sees Reid out, but not before he informs her that her piece in the silent auction sold for $20,000. A woman of her word, Vivian agrees to have her work showcased in Reid's gallery opening.[2]
San Diego Modern Art Fair[]
Reid attends the San Diego Modern Art Fair with Vivian. They celebrate over drinks, and he informs Viv that she has created a lot of excitement, and people are even saying she'd be an ideal candidate for the Neema Artistic Fellowship. Viv is in disbelief, even more so when they are suddenly joined by Philip, who accuses Reid of wanting to steal Viv from him and sleeping with and ditching many other up-and-coming artists. However, Reid denies any wrongdoing and tells Phil that his only interest in Viv is strictly professional. Later that night, Viv joins Reid at the bar, and he tells her that he understands if she needs to take a step back, but Viv actually wants to talk more about the Neeman Artistic Fellowship.[3]
Reid receives a visit from Viv at his gallery. They haven't spoken much since San Diego, but he's a big part of why she was awarded the fellowship, and she simply wanted to thank him. Helping artists such as Viv share their gift with the world is what makes him happiest. Which is why Viv would like to work with him to help other artists of color get the same opportunities she has. Before agreeing, Reid asks how her husband feels about this. She claims that Phil has moved past all his initial objections to her working with Reid.[4]
