Mrs. Hughes is a recurring character on Peacock's modern-day reinterpretation, Bel-Air. She is portrayed by Tatyana Ali.

Mrs. Hughes is a middle school English teacher who sees something special in Ashley, often giving her books from her personal collection.

As class comes to an end, Ms. Hughes gifts Ashley a book to read: The Revolution Has Come. This author, Robin Spencer, takes more about the role black women played in the Panther Party, which Ashley is eager to read. Mrs. Hughes offers to give her extra credit if she writes a two-page summary of her thoughts, which doesn't go unnoticed by another student, Olivia, who reports this, leading to Ms. Hughes being reprimanded.[1]

Mrs. Hughes gives Ashley I'm Still Here: Black Dignity in a World Made for Whiteness

Mrs. Hughes encourages her class to go deeper in their book reports, challenging Ashley to write a shorty story of her own. As class comes to an end, Ashley returns Mrs. Hughes book by Robin Spencer, and in turn, Mrs. Hughes hands her I'm Still Here: Black Dignity in a World Made for Whiteness. Unfortunately, this results in her being fired for teaching outside of the curriculum. On her way out. Mrs. Hughes crosses paths with Ashley. She tells Ashley not to worry about her and to keep being the brilliant young woman who she is and to never allow anyone to change her.[2]

Mrs. Hughes arrives at the Banks' mansion after learning from Ashley that the BSU was arranging a walk-out in an attempt to get her reinstated. Seeing so many of her student using their collective voice to fight for their principles fills her heart. She expresses her gratitude and wishes them good luck.[3]
