Drew Cunningham is a recurring character on Peacock's modern-day reinterpretation, Bel-Air. He is portrayed by Nicholas Duvernay.
Drew is a student at Bel-Air Academy and a member of the BSU.
Biography[]
When their BSU meeting is interrupted by Will and Carlton, Drew accuses the latter of the two of only coming to their meetings previously to get their votes while running for class president. And after he got elected, he never came back. Carlton admits this is true, but the real reason he doesn't do BSUs is that they do a lot of complaining without any action.[1]
As they orchestrate the walk-out, Drew attempts to make his move on Lisa, telling her how he went to Minneapolis with his family during the summer to protest George Floyd's murder. The following day, an emergency BSU meeting is called to discuss if they should move forward with the walk out after the school's attempts to derail the protest by threatening suspension. Fortunately, Carlton and Yazmin manage to come to a mutually beneficial agreement with the school, though when it comes time for Carlton to give his speech, he chokes, which doesn't go unnoticed by Drew.[2]
Drew approaches Carlton at the BSU bowling party and confronts him for blowing the speech at the protest, even pushing Carlton, claiming that he only came to the BSU to help himself, as now he's the faculty's nomination for the Founder's Award. When Drew accuses Carlton of playing kiss up to Ms. Bassin, Carlton attacks Drew in a blind rage and punches him multiple times before revealing that he froze at the protest because he had a panic attack, adding that he has anxiety for which he takes medication in order to fit into their Bel-Air bubble. As Carlton makes his exit, Lisa confronts Drew for instigating the fight. They're supposed to be the BSU, and yet they're treating each other like enemies.[3]
Drew attempts to apologize to Lisa for his fight with Carlton. He insists that he's not a bully and that he likes Lisa. He proposes they catch up tomorrow after school and start over. Lisa agrees to think it over, at which point they notice that Will has yet to arrive for the "Meet the Nominees" forum. Shortly after he does, Drew air drops a video of Carlton allowing Connor to sing Bobby Shmurda's Hot N*gga. When confronted by Will, Drew confesses, though he isn't concerned, telling Will that he can't prove it. Lisa then joins them, reminding Drew of their lunch plans.[4]
After noticing an awkward exchange between Lisa and Carlton, Drew remarks that he isn't sure why Lisa is still Carlton's friend and reveals that he's been hanging with Connor again after watching them leave campus together yesterday.[5]
Drew confronts Lisa after he catches her and Will sneaking back onto campus after skipping first period. She then confronts him about the locker video of Carlton, but when he doesn't respond, she walks off. Later that day, following the mental health kickoff, Drew applauds Carlton for managing to thrive no matter how much Drew rooted against him and attempted to get people to see the real Carlton, who is nothing more than a fraud. And somehow, Lisa is still on Carlton's side, but Drew insists he's not the bad guy, which Carlton confirms publicly during the Founder's Award when he reveals that he's addicted to coke.[6]
